I had a debate at the gym the yesterday about if nascar driver's really athletes? And do they have to be in shape? True story!!! I said no because of how hard is it to drive a car for 4 hours. I have done it plenty of times before, but maybe its easy for me becasue I 'm good shape!!! People were really debating this so I would like to get your input.

Eric,

Interesting question. I don't consider NASCAR drivers athletes, at least not in the traditional sense. However, they train by racing on their own. They may not be getting much cardiovascular or stength training work but they are aiming to improve their skills. So while I may not agree that NASCAR drivers are athletes in the truest sense, they probably deserve as much credit as horse jockeys, golfers and bowlers currently garner.
