I think technology has become a negative part of our society. We are so reliant on technology that simple tasks are being replaced. Shopping and sending a letter have become things of the past. You no longer have to leave the house to do almost everything. The average person needs at least 10,000 steps a day and today some people may not reach half of that. Things like the Wii and the DDR system are changing that view. They are great technologies that create movement. Technology is a great thing if it is used for simplicity not a route for inactivity.
I agree with what h.watts had to say. Technology has made people more lazier especially the youth of today. Kids don't go out and play outside as much as they use too. Today, kids would rather sit inside and play their video games and eat unhealthy snacks. I feel technology has been a contributing factor to the down fall of physical education in the American society.
Well, as a cyber school teacher I am probably going to tell you that technology and the advent of the internet, in particular, is a great thing. Think about it, when I started taking classes at Towson University a decade ago, I never dreamed I would be making a living teaching PE this way. After nearly 5 years, I am still going strong. Nevertheless the obesity rate has soared with the popularity and availability of video games and all things related. I still believe that technology has its place in society and can help us as educators take back the physical activity levels we used to know for our youth.
I think technology has both helped and hurt people and their levels of physical activity. For example, new technology like expresso bikes, WII, ipods, and other things might help individuals be more motivated to want to be involved in physical activity. I think it mostly because it helps them find something that interestes them, instead of running forever on a treadmill or outside. On the other hand, I think our youth struggles with it. When I was a kid we weren't allowed to do anything but entertain ourselves outside. In fact, I remeber that in my house, if you were grounded, it usually meant that you can't go outside. Which was torture for us. So, I think that has done both helped and hurt the population on the physical activty level.
